CISC bootcamp 2023: Exploring Human Factors in Intelligent Autonomous and Robotic Systems: possible data collection, analysis and validation approaches

12-16 June 2023 – Torino, Italy

In the dynamic sector of intelligent autonomous and robotic systems, the Collaborative Intelligence for Safety Critical Systems project hosted a transformative bootcamp from June 12th to June 16th, 2023. The agenda, centered around exploring human factors in these cutting-edge technologies, showcased an array of expert speakers, hands-on sessions, and thought-provoking discussions.

Monday 12th June 2023
The opening day set the stage for a week of exploration. Keynote speaker Noel Fitzpatrick from TU Dublin delivered a thought-provoking address on “Technē Logos,” challenging conventional thinking on reason and the idiomatic. The day unfolded with insights into Human Factors (HF) in control rooms, integrating HF in Ireland’s National Train Control Centre, and addressing Occupational Safety and Health Guidance for Remote Working. Neuroergonomics and physiological computing were also explored, presenting new methods to enhance human-system interaction.

Tuesday 13th June 2023

The second day delved into the technical aspects of data mining and machine learning. Gabriele Giannini from UNIMI provided a comprehensive overview of The Weka Environment, followed by sessions on Association Rule Mining and Ensemble Learning. Participants also gained insights into the analysis of data from eye trackers using Tobii tracker technology.

Wednesday 14th June 2023

Luca Gualtieri led a lecture introducing industrial human-robot interaction, discussing opportunities and challenges. The day continued with sessions on mechanical safety in collaborative robotics, guidelines for integrating cognitive ergonomics, and an engaging group exercise on risk management and safety-driven re-design of collaborative assembly systems.

Friday 16th June 2023

The bootcamp concluded with a unique exploration of Generative AI and creative writing. Char Putney and Martin Pichlmair facilitated sessions on working with Generative AI, ethical considerations, and specific writing exercises with AI, using the LAIKA platform. The day culminated in a final working session, with participants uploading their submissions, marking the successful conclusion of a week dedicated to advancing the understanding and application of human-centric principles in the realm of intelligent autonomous and robotic systems.
